President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance will certainly light up a movement to oust him in favor of a last-minute replacement. But can we talk for a second about those unnamed members of the campaign’s “brain trust” who set him up for this? If the campaign were a football team, it would be time to clean house. The entire coaching staff needs to be fired.
By now, former President Donald Trump is like a division rival the team has been up against for years. Both his weaknesses and his attack strategy are well-known.
Trump offered so much vulnerability — from his lies (legal scholars loving his killing Roe, foreign leaders liking him more than Biden, the level of immigrant crime) to revealing his blatant ignorance about climate change (“We had H2O.”). Then, as expected, he deflected from his weaknesses by attacking Biden.
This isn’t hard. Rule one is ignore the attack and call him out on the lies and the ignorance. Yet, repeatedly, Biden was suckered into defending the attack and letting Trump’s weaknesses stand. That is a failure in coaching.
We can have that argument about who should head the ticket. But that team behind the candidate has to go!
