2025 U.S. Open Golf Betting Picks: Best Bets, Sleepers and Top Odds for Oakmont

It can be hard to fully accept Scottie Scheffler’s status when you realize he’s never won the U.S. Open and his recent win at the PGA Championship is just his third major.

Something tells me Scheffler has undergone the same self-examination.

Scheffler is definitely the favorite at Oakmont this week as he chases that first U.S. Open title. The course has been toughened up to be a big challenge, but somebody will tame it while many others will see their scoreboards loaded with ugly numbers.

Reportedly, only 27 golfers have shot under par in the previous 12 majors — nine U.S. Opens and three PGA Championships — at Oakmont. So you can expect only a few golfers to be under par on Sunday.

Scheffler (+275 to win) put together three straight top-10 finishes at the U.S. Open before stumbling to a tie for 41st at Pinehurst last year. It wasn’t a pleasant four days of golf.

If you bet on Scheffler to win and he doesn’t, don’t request money from him. Even crazier: Scheffler said he was often sent a few dollars from bettors who prospered on his victories. Regardless, he’s resolved the issue by canceling his Venmo account.

What matters to you now is how Scheffler deals with the wild rough and the tough Oakmont course. He’s also on a mammoth run in which he has won three of his last four events and placed in the top 10 in seven straight. Riding the best golfer in the sport when he’s red-hot is the absolute best bet you can make.

Contenders who could be lurking

Bryson DeChambeau (+750) is the defending champion and a two-time U.S. Open winner, so you can expect him to be in the hunt. He seems out of sight, out of mind sometimes now that he’s on the LIV tour.

Rory McIlroy (+1200) ended his majors drought with his playoff win at the Masters in April, but telling the world he shot 81 in a recent practice round at Oakmont doesn’t build confidence in putting money on him.

Xander Schauffele (+2200) won two majors last season, but his recent tie for eighth at Augusta is his lone top-10 showing of the year. He might be a top-10 candidate (+180).

Jon Rahm (+1200) won the U.S. Open in 2021 and is someone who can be in the hunt on Sunday. Stay away from Justin Thomas (+5000), who missed the cut in seven of the last 10 majors.

Collin Morikawa (+2500 to win, +360 top five) is a guy who can make a run with nine top-10 finishes — and two victories — in major tournaments.

Remember when Brooks Koepka (+6000) was winning or making a run at nearly every major? He missed the cut at both of this year’s Grand Slam events.

And, oh, Phil Mickelson’s here. He’s going to hate this — that elusive U.S. Open title is never coming. The guy with six runner-up finishes has missed the cut in four of the past five U.S. Opens.

A long shot to make noise

We all know how this works. Some super-duper long shot will be in the mix throughout the tournament. Jack Fleck missed the cut in six of his 12 U.S. Open appearances but won the event in 1955 and tied for third in 1960. He had three total PGA victories.

Rocco Mediate’s 2008 performance at Torrey Pines is one of the best in the history of golf. Nobody expected him to be part of the leaderboard that year, and he ended up battling Tiger Woods for five days and 91 holes before succumbing.

Let’s look for someone who could crack the top 10. Tom Hoge (+1100, top 10) has one PGA win but finished in a tie for seventh at the Memorial last week. Perhaps J.T. Poston (+750, top 10), who has missed three of five U.S. Open cuts but tied for fifth at the PGA Championship in mid-May. Anyone for Max Greyserman (+1000, top 10), who tied for 21st last year in his first U.S. Open?
