San Francisco Giants standout third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right hand inflammation prior to Tuesday’s game against the host Colorado Rockies.
Chapman injured the hand while being picked off during Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros. He jammed it while diving back to first base in the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately displayed he was in pain.
Chapman, 32, finished out the game and underwent X-rays, which came back negative. Still, the inflammation remained the following day and then a move was made on Tuesday.
The five-time Gold Glove winner is batting .243 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 65 games this season. He is in his second season with the Giants.
Casey Schmitt will likely receive the most duty at third base while Chapman is sidelined. Schmitt is playing third Tuesday night and batting seventh.
The Giants recalled infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. The 27-year-old batted .219 with one homer and eight RBIs in 29 games with San Francisco earlier this season.
