Keeping Aaron Judge inside the ballpark is always a good thing for pitchers, but it doesn’t always equate to a victory.
The Los Angeles Angels will try to keep Judge — tied for second in the majors with 18 homers — from launching any mammoth blasts on Tuesday when they continue their three-game series against the visiting New York Yankees. Judge didn’t go deep in Monday’s opener but reached base three times on a single and two walks and scored twice as New York prevailed 5-1.
We will study the Yankees-Angels game as well as two other contests: the Miami Marlins at San Diego Padres and the Oakland Athletics visiting the Houston Astros.
Yankees at Angels
Judge has slugged five homers in 18 career games at Angel Stadium, but he is hitless in six at-bats (three strikeouts, three walks) against Angels Tuesday starter Tyler Anderson. The left-hander is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three career starts against New York. Though Anderson (2-1, 3.60 ERA) hasn’t won since April 18, Los Angeles is 8-2 in his starts this season.
New York counters with left-hander Carlos Rodón (6-3, 2.88), who has won his past five decisions and hasn’t lost since April 13. But Rodón hasn’t always been stout against the Angels, going 3-4 with a 5.21 ERA in seven career starts. Recently signed Chris Taylor is 5-for-9 with a homer and two doubles against him.
The Yankees have won 14 of their past 18 games and have scored 23 runs over the past three games. The Angels? They have scored just three runs while losing three straight. The silent bats follow a run of eight straight victories.
Pick: Yankees -1.5 run line, -115 (DraftKings)

Marlins at Padres
It seemed like Manny Machado’s power had vanished — he hit just three homers over his first 48 appearances. But suddenly, the long ball is back in his repertoire with three homers in the past four games, including a booming blast in Monday’s 4-3, 11-inning win over the Marlins.
All six of Machado’s homers are solo shots. He may be on the verge of a sustained streak, which would be timely considering he has been productive overall with a .319 batting average and .497 slugging percentage. San Diego has won three of its last four after dropping eight of the previous 10.
Miami had won six of 10 prior to the opener of this three-game set in San Diego. The Padres’ lineup will be a solid test for right-hander Max Meyer, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 draft. Meyer has put together a few solid outings, topped by six scoreless innings and 14 strikeouts in a win over the Cincinnati Reds on April 21.
Pick: Marlins +154 moneyline, -115 (DraftKings)

Athletics at Astros
The Astros just took three of four from the visiting Seattle Mariners and allowed a total of six runs in the three victories. In the first of a two-game set against the Athletics, right-hander Hunter Brown (6-3, 2.04 ERA) will be looking to bounce back from his worst start of the season — five runs in five innings in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Athletics left-hander JP Sears (4-4, 4.00 ERA) gave up four homers in five innings against the Angels in his last turn. One Houston player rushing to the bat rack is Chas McCormick, who has two homers and is 4-for-12 overall against Sears.
But the real issue for Oakland is the bullpen. Before Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, the A’s had lost 11 straight games and allowed 85 runs, giving up nine or more six times. There aren’t many scary arms in that ‘pen.
Pick: Over 7.5 runs scored, -115 (DraftKings)
