The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has become the first tertiary institute in the city to offer places to undergraduates or postgraduates from Harvard University after the United States barred the latter from enrolling international students.

HKUST announced on Friday that it was “opening its doors to Harvard students amid global academic shifts”, expediting admissions, credit transfers and prioritising support for transitioning students, such as visa help and housing.

A special team and email hotline have been set up for prospective students affected by the ban.

“Diversity fuels creativity and progress,” said HKUST’s provost Professor Guo Yike.

“We are prepared to welcome Harvard students into our community, offering them the resources and vibrant environment needed to thrive in their fields.”

Earlier on Friday, the US Department of Homeland Security announced it was barring Harvard University from enrolling international students. Existing international students must either transfer to other institutions or leave the country.
