Data centers: Turn to plentiful wind, solar energy

As I look at the photo that accompanies this article, I see enormous, flat-roofed buildings housing data centers in Quincy, not far from where I live in Wenatchee. There are more such buildings in East Wenatchee and soon to be more here in Wenatchee.

I’m sure that most readers are aware of the amount of direct sunlight we get here in Eastern Washington, not to mention the winds that blow almost nonstop in the Columbia Basin. I am at a loss as to why there are no solar arrays on these enormous buildings, which would afford shade for those roofs, and that there are no wind turbines. A combination of the two could be enough to power a major portion of the power needed for operation. There are rooftop wind turbines that would work with little impact on wildlife and almost no maintenance.

Microsoft is currently building new data centers here in Wenatchee with more planned. I really hope that they are including these in their planning.
